Our Impact

WHERE WE WORK

ABOUT US

Why we exist

The overwhelming majority of People Living with Sickle Cell Disease in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to comprehensive, timely, quality and affordable diagnosis, clinical management and patient care. ASCO is building an Africa where no one living with sickle cell is invisible, neglected or left behind.

WHAT WE DO

Our Programs

We address systemic barriers to health care faced by people living with SCD. These includes the health system and healthcare delivery gaps

  • Delayed or missed diagnosis
  • Insufficient provider knowledge and training
  • Poor access to essential medicines and commodities
  • Weak referral and continuity of care systems
  • Low patient and caregiver SCD literacy
  • Data and information gaps
  • Absence of psychosocial and supportive care services

Since 2020, we have supported 5 clinics across 4 secondary and tertiary level facilities to provide early, continuous SCD care at out-patient and in-patient levels in Kenya

We believe no one should be denied care because of where they live or how much they earn. ASCO ensures PLSCD and health systems that serve them can access and deliver care affordably, effectively and sustainably. We address the following

  • High out of pocket costs to care
  • Limited access to nearby services
  • Lack of information on care options
  • Stock-outs and poor access to essential medicines
  • Fragmented and unsustainable funding models
  • Weak systems for ongoing care and follow-up

Since 2020, ASCO has supported 250 healthcare plans for patients and households to afford care. We have ongoing partnerships for revolving fund models in 2 facilities.

ASCO seeks to improve lives of sickle cell populations and create opportunities for them to thrive with sickle cell. Our livelihood program addresses the following challenges

  • Interrupted education and school drop outs
  • Malnutrition and undernutrition
  • Limited access to skills training and capital
  • Caregiver economic burden
